Why do people lose or gain weight?

People say a lot of things but when it comes to your family and friends or people you care about it's too much.
This is to let people know that it is wrong to judge someone without knowing the reality. It's blatantly stupid.

So recently a lot of people noticed that I lost weight. They appreciated. Some even asked me tips on how I did it.
Usually all my life I have had a belly( I am human) Some people called it baby fat.
Earlier when I was chubby there were people who pointed it out to me. Well won't lie I didn't feel good. At that time I did not know how to lose it but surely wanted to lose it because of what people used to say.

When I finally decided to lose weight I had a desire to have a very toned body for the looks of it. Then slowly with time my intention changed. I wanted to be healthier and happier.That is the reason I still work out even when the results are not instant.

When I saw results in terms of improved health conditions and mood; it kept me motivated. A good figure was a by product. I still desire to get a toned body and when I come to my senses I realise how vain and vague it really is to run after the superficiality of our external body.
I might gain weight I might lose weight but I will not stop being conscious of my health.

That was my story. But the real reason I am writing this post is to make people a little bit aware about why people lose or gain weight.

People can lose or gain weight due to a trillion reasons.

Depression/ Body dysmorphia issues: As silly it may sound, mental health can affect weight. Body dysmorphia is a condition where people are unable to accept their own bodies and have a distorted picture in their minds.

Reproductive health

Conditions like giving birth to a child, Thyroid, PCOD can make people lose or gain weight.

Diabetes
While some people gain weight in diabetes some people may lose weight and sometimes it is not in their hand. However diabetics should maintain a moderately healthy body weight or sometimes even lower to maintain their body glucose levels due to imbalance in their insulin production.

Anoerexia

It is an eating disorder where people are unable to maintain a standard appetite.

Chronic illness

There are diseases which take a toll on the body for many years and may cause sudden loss or gain in weight.

Obesity

Obesity can be diet induced or even genetic. Childhood eating habits can prevail into adulthood to cause obesity.

Smoking

Smoking disrupts a lot of detoxification pathways of the body and may also lead to an unhealthy gain or loss in the body.

Alcohol
If someone is an avid drinker they may gain weight due to malfunction of the liver which is responsible for fat mechanisms in the body.

Societal pressure

Seeing people online with poster bodies can trigger some people to want to lose or gain weight to look a certain way.

Environment and availability

People who do not have healthy eating habits at home may lose or gain weight due to dependence on nutrient heavy( junk) or devoid foods( imbalanced diet)

People who predominantly eat foods higher in Salt sugar and oil/ fat will always have a higher risk of being obese unless they have a higher metabolism.

These are few points in my knowledge. The next time you see someone has lost weight or gained weight please keep these information in your mind; instead of making a blatant comment about their weight or body shape.

People struggle with a lot of things in their regular life and the last thing you want them to deal with is any insensitive comment about their weight. I have seen people in my family and friends struggle more with comments from society than their own body issues.

So it is important for us to know the reality. If you are genuinely concerned about their health ask the why and how rather than making them feel inferior. I believe in science and rationality and both of these support the fact that we should all give up our quest to achieve perfect aesthetics and focus more on our personal behaviour and health.
